Useful site. City Hippy Central, without the stinky patchouli oil and gunja.

Finding ways to live in the city sustainably and wisely can be a challege. I welcome all the help I can get.

Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees

From the page: "Self Sufficient 'ish' - Urban Self sufficiency - Welcome Not all of us have the means the space or are perhaps unwilling to give it all up and suffer the highs and lows of going it alone on a smallholding. That is why self sufficient 'ish'.com came along. We provide a growing database of self sufficiency articles. "

Okay, drop the weapon - I know you smell "hippy", and that's not an entirely unfair descriptor here, but this is the really good stuff. You have to love any URL that ends in "ish" anyway, am I right? This is a goldmine of HOWTO do real-world things like growing food and cooking it, making your own daily needs items and much else, all on a pauper's budget without adding to the Earth's ruination. It may seem a commune homepage to the grizzled city folk amongst us, but the info here is great..

Great stuff here, for those who want a greener, more independent lifestyle without going the rural route.

From the page: "Many of us yearn to live the good life, but not all of us can go the whole hog and run a smallholding. [homestead] But that shouldn't put anyone off. If you can't become self-sufficient then why not try to become self-sufficient-ish? Twins Andy and Dave Hamilton have established a web site with a modern take on the ethos of self-sufficiency, and aim to show us how." There are articles for the city-dweller who wants to grow at least a few herbs and "leave a smaller ecological footprint," and articles for the rural dweller zoned for, and interested in, raising goats and chickens. Something for a wide range of interests. British-based, but most of it can be applied in the USA, too.
