- you need good monitor headphones for accurate sound reproduction. you gotta hone in the the wavelengths that arnt covered in smaller bitrates. One sounds more processed and static the other sounds more dynamic and full toned. Instead of listening to the notes listen to the silences that reside between them, also isolate the undertone, the overtone and the full harmonic spectrum. Which resonates more vibrantly?

- i deal in 160kbps for the majority of my collection, which is good enough for casual listening. and i go all the way to the other end of the spectrum for my special stuff. FLAC files. hearing the difference between a flac file and an average mp3 file was mind blowing
