- Several years back I purchased the McAfee security suite and it screwed up my computer terribly. Ever since then I have hated McAfee with a burning passion and won't touch its products with a ten-foot pole. When it comes to computers, I have a loooooooong memory. I personally don't need something to be told what is safe online and what isn't, but perhaps this is useful for people less well-versed in computer security. At least it is free.

Free Mccafee Site Advisor A fine tool from a trusted company . You can use this McCafee utility as an extension with Firefox, or with IE. Check out the Site Advisor report before downloading anything from a site. It tells you if the site has bad downloads, viruses, spyware, or spam, and gives user reviews. Also, it shows which sites are good or bad in your search results when you use certain search engines like Google. - glass bottomed canoe from here with thanx

- If you want to know if the site you're about to look at is fake or has spyware, viruses, spam, phishing etc then you really need to download this browser extension. It works with IE or Firefox.

- Now this is one freeware that I really like. Lets me know in advance if a site is full of spyware or downloads that are full of the same, if you know what I mean. I have a site that I happened to come across - "Totally Free Stuff" - and I thought it was just one of those things that send you bunches of spam and promise free* items (if you fill certain requirements, like signing up for something super-expensive). I remember when I was a real newbie and would get sucked in every time. This is great and convenient!
