It even has an associated AI community where people design programs to evolve walkers for speed etc. Apart from that it is a fascinating waste of time.

Elegant simplicity - makes a lot of sense. Its a good distant abstraction of real world concepts. (and it rocks!)

You need to be some sort of 'grid making' god to be able to make one of the super cool things. On the other hand - you don't need to have any level of skill to be able to create something of some level of coolness.
