I'm not sure that I think koans are en effective aid on the path to enlightenment, but read as absurdist mini-fiction, they're pretty entertaining.

From the site: These koans, or parables, were translated into English from a book called the Shaseki-shu (Collection of Stone and Sand), written late in the thirteenth century by the Japanese Zen teacher Muju (the "non-dweller"), and from anecdotes of Zen monks taken from various books published in Japan around the turn of the 20th century.

In this way and that I tried to save the old pail Since the bamboo strip was weakening and about to break Until at last the bottom fell out. No more water in the pail! No more moon in the water! ~Chiyono

What a delightful departure from the daily grind. I shall remember to visit these often.
