More news from the Singularity front. "The Grid" the interweb's (hehe) replacement that CERN (home of the first internet) has built. 10,000 times faster than the web we use today. A full length movie completely downloaded in a few seconds.

From the page: "THE internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds. At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, â€oethe grid” will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds."

The Large Hadron Collider generates so much information that it necessitates an incredibly high speed (~10,000 times faster than current broadband) connection to transmit the information. So far about 8,000 servers are connected to this new hi-speed network. It has the tremendous possibility of changing the way we communicate (holographic telecommunications).

This is great!
And in time for the LHC project? Even better!
Of course, the gaming aspect is an excellent perk as well ^_^

Oh.. my.. God... I think I just creamed myself. At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, "the grid" will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds. The latest spin-off from Cern, the particle physics centre that created the web, the grid could also provide the kind of power needed to transmit holographic images; allow instant online gaming with hundreds of thousands of players; and offer high-definition video telephony for the price of a local call.

It's been talked about for a few years now and I'm still waiting for it to hit here. I'll bet we Brits get charged a shit load for the upgrade.
