i'm wondering whether those number things are also true for the european market. the debate below that post is, for once, quite interesting (though i confess i haven't read the whole thing)

I would have thumbed this up if the author wasn't so ignorant about the nature of genetically modified food.

What's wrong with GMO? Monsanto. They just want to make a profit. They don't care about you or the farmer or the people they displaced to grow crops. Not that other food companies do, but the ones that sell GMO products--do you really trust those companies to be honest to the FDA? Sure, GMO has a lot of potential, but from what I've heard about Monsanto--I'd rather not buy their stuff if I can help it. o.0

From the page: "Okay, so if you come across an apple in the store and it's labeled 4922, it's an conventional apple grown with herbicides and harmful fertilizers. If it has a sticker 99222, it's organic and safe to eat. If it says 89222, then RUN!!!! It has been genetically modified (GMO)."

From the page: "Okay, so if you come across an apple in the store and itâ€s labeled 4922, itâ€s an conventional apple grown with herbicides and harmful fertilizers. I was skeptical when I stumbled this so I went to http://www.plucodes.com and verified that it is accurate. Genetically modified food itself won't hurt you (this is real life, it's not going to meld with your DNA or sprout tentacles in your fridge). What MAKES it harmful is that it is usually modified so that dangerous chemicals such as Round-Up can be sprayed on it without killing the crop.

Interesting post about the number coding on fruits to know if its organic, traditional or GMO based. It gets very interesting in the comments section where a heated debate over organics vs GMO produce takes place.
