A good post from my friend 'yobaba', and important information that needs to be passed around. From the page: "The irony is extraordinary. At a time when world leaders are expressing grave concern about diminishing food stocks and a coming global food crisis, our government brings into force measures to increase the use of biofuels - a policy that will further increase food prices, and further worsen the plight of the world's poor."

The irony is extraordinary. At a time when world leaders are expressing grave concern about diminishing food stocks and a coming global food crisis, governments are bringing into force measures to increase the use of biofuels - a policy that will further increase food prices, and further worsen the plight of the world's poor. What biofuels do is undeniable: they take food out of the mouths of starving people and divert them to be burned as fuel in the car engines of the world's rich consumers. This is, in the words of the United Nations special rapporteur on the right to food, Jean Ziegler, nothing less than a "crime against humanity". It is a crime the US and UK governments seem determined to play its part in abetting. You say you want a revolution, well, you know, we all want to change to world. You say you got a real solution, well, you know, we'd all love to see the plan.

"World cereal stocks are at an all-time low, food-aid programmes have run out of money and millions face starvation. Yet wealthy countries persist with plans to use grain for petrol. Plus Iain Macwhirter on how food prices are rocketing."

The Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO), introduced on 15 April, mandates petrol retailers to mix 2.5 per cent biofuels into fuel sold to motorists. This will rise to 5.75 per cent by 2010, in line with European Union policy."

stop being a jackass. Biofuels offer a sustainable source of energy, while fossil fuels do not. Which one would you like to develop for future generations? Here's some knowledge: Hemp yields about 1000 gallons of ethanol per acre, whilst corn yields a mere 354 gallons per acre. Plus man, weed grows literally everywhere. And hemp won't diminish the food supply for humans (hehe) or for my hamburger currently being fattened somewhere on an animal farm in Kansas. We are presumably at the event horizon of a recession... lets create a huge fucking industry to sustain economic growth while simultaneously staving off famine in poor countries, and for a finale create a plausible energy plan that is both logical and green. Legalize the herb already!

You won't hear anything about this from the lefties pushing ethanol and biofuels at us. Oh, and stick the "rich people" rhetoric up your ass, unless you are talking about evil rich hypocritical liberals.
