this is so fun to see the cycles of names. my brother was named after a character in a '70s book, and you should see the spike. i was sad but not surprised to see "humphrey" went out in the 1890s. perhaps a resurrection is in order? next season on the "o.c." - humphrey better be there.

this is great - after an afternoon with this you'll be sure you've left no name unchecked! best of all, check how names that died out inthe 1890s (Virgil, Bubba) are just a decade from resurgence!

Interactive visual exploration of baby name popularity, from The Baby Name Wizard

Awful baby names are funny, but here's a baby name site that's really interesting and gives you an historical overview of baby name popularity. I was interested to see that my mother's now quite unusual name was fairly popular when she was born -- and astonished to find that my grandparents' names -- which now seem totally weird-- were also not unusual for their age.

Fascinating site, see how popular or not your name is and when, search for almost any name and look at the graph gives a great picture of society and trends regarding what children are named.

Hi, my name's Kristi. Did you know that in the 1970's that my name was the 107th most common name (with that particular spelling) given to baby girls, but now it's completely dropped off the top 1000 list? Want to know where your name stands? You MUST visit this website. It's an interactive graph that lets you see when your name was most popular.

This thing is awesome. I still can't believe people named their kids Love, Fate, and Princess...
