Tips on some seemingly innocuous gestures that have very different meanings abroad. Interesting.

I actually did the mistake of putting my foot up in a Muslim country. After receiving some really bad stares and shakes of disapproval I remembered that it is an insult in that part of the country and promptly lowered my foot. Always keep in mind the people who are around you so you do not offend them! Always try to be conscious of those in your area as you are a guest in their land.

"Although "thumbs up" symbol means "ok," or "good," in the U.S. in parts of the Middle East, it means you want to have sexual relations with the person you're giving the thumbs up to. I guess someone had better tell all the soldiers giving the thumbs up all over Iraq, huh?"

From the page:

In the Maasai tribe of Africa, spitting on the head is a form of blessing (this is an old custom that is fading away). What is still common though, is the older person of two meeting spitting on their hand before shaking hands -thereby transferring the goodness of their spirit in saliva as a blessing to the other. Eew.

"Well. Aren't I the popular one."
