UPDATE Official Countdown Began Sunday Night Launch Date: Aug. 8 Launch Time: 6:36 p.m. EDT At the launch pad, the final inspection team -- also known as the "Ice Team" -- is inspecting the space shuttle's exterior, making sure it is in good condition and free of ice and debris. One major launch milestone -- "tanking," the filling of Endeavour's orange external tank with 500,000 gallons of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen -- is complete. All systems onboard the space shuttle are functioning normally this morning, and there's only a 20 percent chance of weather prohibiting a liftoff at 6:36 p.m. EDT. Mission STS-118 will be the first for Mission Specialist Barbara Morgan, the teacher-turned-astronaut whose association with NASA began more than 20 years ago. First Lady Laura Bush called Morgan Tuesday morning to offer congratulations "one schoolteacher to another," and to thank her for her commitment to the space program and to education. Will be leaving for the VAB in a few minutes, I pray for a beautiful launch!!!!!

From the page: "After reaching orbit, the crew observed an object floating past the overhead window. Astronaut Mike Fossum described it as possibly a thermal protection blanket. NASA is in the initial stages of analyzing this and other data from the launch." They've investigated: It was Rush Limbaugh.

Discovery Crew Walkout - 11 a.m. Update
With American flags in their hands, the astronauts walked out of the Operations and Checkout Building to employees and guests cheering and waving on this July 4, Independence Day. They appreciatively waved back and boarded the silver NASA Astrovan that took them on the 20-minute trip to the launch pad.

Currently, there is an 80-percent chance of favorable weather forecasted for launch time. If the weather cooperates, Discovery will liftoff at 2:38 p.m. for the International Space Station and be the first Independence Day launch of a space shuttle!
