Volcano eruptions and meteorites crashing into the earth can both release mercury into the air resulting in illness and even death. Note that the police were given oxygen. One of the major effects of air pollution is difficulty breathing.
From the page: "Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odor," local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP. Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said."
And the ill villagers went home to die peacefully with their families...
Hours later, the small Peruvian village was overrun with militia teams who were called to the scene based on reports of a string of murders. The area was quickly shut off. Witnesses who escaped whispered, with shocked looks on their faces, "they were eating...people"
