Practical advice on getting healthy.

I'm never much of one for the "lists of" websites, but this one was pretty good. I especially think it's true that when you're starting out, you need to make the changes gradually. Trying to change the entire way you eat overnight isn't usually very successful. Making small changes along the way is will leave much more satisfied and not feeling like you had to give up all the good stuff.

Not all of these tips are hugely useful for me. For instance many of the tips revolve around you being zen about your regimen, which may work for some but not so much for me - not because I'm not across the whole zen philosophy (I am, very much so), but simply because that philosophy may have helped this guy, but it's not made exercise and diet any easier for me to think about it in terms of focus and 'being present'.

Diet is the other one. I eat bloody well. I don't eat chocolate, sugar-rich foods, junk food, take away fast food - not because I have an iron will but because I am blessed with taste buds that do not respond well to those foods - I simply don't like the taste of them, and so my diet has never been my problem. 80% of my dietary intake is vegetable, and most of the rest is grain-based. In fact my biggest problem is that my diet is hugely carb-based - potato, noodles, rice, bread, pasta make up most meals for me.

As for exercise ... well, I have no car and so walk everywhere, and do the shopping daily, but I work six days a week and because of the odd times at which I work, joining a sporting team or a gym isn't really a hugely practical option. Also, I don't jog, period. I really, really don't enjoy jogging.

That said, I am only barely overweight, and for many people I am sure many of these tips are indeed handy. One tip that I did think was useful was to get yourself an exercise partner. Exercising with someone else makes you commit to the activity, gives you someone to chat to, makes the process more fun, and also gives you more options, such as tennis, squash and other two-player sports, as well as encouragement (or a target). That's good advice.

So thumbs up because this could be useful to many, and a couple of these points are worth reading, even if the bulk of the suggestions simply do not apply to you.

The truth be told, I did quit for a while. With school, work and working out was a bit much. I will have to start both over.
