Twelve Virtues of Rationality by Eliezer Yudkowsky

"The first virtue is curiosity. A burning itch to know is higher than a solemn vow to pursue truth. To feel the burning itch of curiosity requires both that you be ignorant, and that you desire to relinquish your ignorance. If in your heart you believe you already know, or if in your heart you do not wish to know, then your questioning will be purposeless and your skills without direction. Curiosity seeks to annihilate itself; there is no curiosity that does not want an answer. The glory of glorious mystery is to be solved, after which it ceases to be mystery."

Thanks "Redshift13." What a cool find on rationalism. My favorite "ism."

While I have yet to see my ideal list of the intellectual virtues, this is a worthy addition to the growing but scattered and project of articulating the principles behind a broad conception of ideal mind use. This kind of work also enriches a growing body of secular ethical thought and insight, and thus further deepens the roots of what I hope is an increasing and permanent secularization trend in western post-industrial countries.

From the page: "These then are twelve virtues of rationality: Curiosity, relinquishment, lightness, evenness, argument, empiricism, simplicity, humility, perfectionism, precision, scholarship, and the void."

Important essay for anybody interested in becoming, or rather, achieving true rationality. Twelve virtues are listed as components, being: curiosity, relinquishment, lightness, evenness, argument, empiricism, simplicity, humility, perfectionism, precision, scholarship, and the void. One of the virtues has a problem, however. Evenness, in combination with relinquishment can lead the unbeliever (for lack of a better word) to dangerous, and dated, beliefs, however fleeting. Perhaps, rationality in dealing with your own criticism is a better option.
