The title of this Yemenese newspaper says, maybe with a sigh of releaf-"For the first time in Yemen--8-year-old girl asks for divorce in court".And the crime was a twisted interpretation of the relaxation of a child mariage law. I'm sure more than half the population was appalled when the law was changed. And then there was the fact that stumbleupon has tagged this article under 'Islam'.At first, straight away rather, I thought of reporting it for a changing of topic. After all, it looks like having nothing to do with anyone belonging to the religion that I personaly know! Then I realised there was certain truth to it. If someone is going to change these things, it is the muslim/islamic community. So far it has proved to be rather cowardly when it comes to challenge anything done in the name of religion. One country after another, the mullahs(or whosoever are their Aka's) have oppressed the citizens and changed the laws to their pervert interpretations of medeival scriptures. And one country after another, the general populace has succumbed to their wishes, hating their guts but never having the guts to point its copius guns on them. How much longer do the muslims of the world wait for a Renaissance? About time the common muslim kicked butts of the higher ups. It's not just that child marriages are not prevalent in sections of my country. It's not that we are not a bunch of lousy self-centred lethargics as a nation. It's not that politicians don't turn a blind eye to the customs for the fear of losing vote banks. But there always is a bunch of conscenscious people that questions the social norms and does everything to force the government to outlaw the customs and then enforce the law. It's not easy and it takes a lot of courage against great pesonal risk. Luckily, there are people who have the courage to fight the soceity and the so-called religion. And when they speak, we listen to them instead of the powerful politicians. So far, at least. And we strive for it to always remain so.Quite germane is the fact that the biggest weapon that we have improved our soceity with are the courts and Law of The Country -- which people have strived to keep as secular as possible. So when the biggest religious head of Hindus is sent behind bars, there is no sympathy for him and no rioting, whatever vested interests may try.

Nojoud Muhammed Nasser, eight years old, was forced to marry a 30 year old who used all his rights. He beat her and had sex with her. She went alone to court to ask for a divorce which was granted.

I can't believe they USED TO have a law that said you can't marry off children under the age of 15, then they ammended it in 1998 - what the f*ck! Seriously what kind if society thinks it is acceptable to marry children of ANY AGE. This just peeves me right off!

From the page: "An eight-year-old girl decided last week to go the Sana'a West Court to prosecute her father, who forced her to marry a 30-year-old man. Nojoud Muhammed Nasser arrived at court by herself on Wednesday, April 2, looking for a judge to handle her case against her father, Muhammed Nasser, who forced her two months ago to marry Faez Ali Thamer, a man 22 years her senior. The child also asked for a divorce, accusing her husband of sexual and domestic abuse. According to Yemeni law, Nojoud cannot prosecute, as she is underage. However, court judge Muhammed Al-Qathi heard her complaint and subsequently ordered the arrests of both her father and husband." What a courageous girl! If she lived in a civilized country that respected and protected the rights of children to grow up and realize their potential (no matter what gender) I'd say she had a bright future. In a country that allows a father to force her to marry at 8 ... I wish her well. At the risk of offending the PC bunch I have to say that not all cultures are created equal. The next time you are asked to be "culturally sensitive" please remember how women and children are treated in islamic countries. The USA has its share of whack-jobs and there are certainly a lot of men who molest children but underage marriage is not legal and there are penalties for convicted molesters.

I refused but I couldn't stop the marriage," Nojoud Nasser told the Yemen Times. "I asked and begged my mother, father, and aunt to help me to get divorced. They answered, 'We can do nothing. If you want you can go to court by yourself.' So this is what I have done," she said." The next time someone talks about respecting other cultures think about this.
