Oh, I love stuff like this. I don't think I have the patience and memory anymore to study Chinese of any variety and become proficient, but I would love to study it for this reason. The facility of symbology is so intriguing!

Cool idea, with a lot of interesting linguistic terms explained, but the language he's turning out isn't very /good/, I would say. But hey, maybe that's how all languages started out

If Chinese WERE Written Like English. Very interesting, but the subjunctive in English is not dead!

That was a pretty great illustration of the basis for the Chinese writing system, I thought. Nice!

This is a fairly accurate characterization of how Chinese characters work. Also a very interesting thought experiment. Only a handful of Chinese characters are 'pictographs' in the strictest sense - i.e. pictures of physical things or entities. The vast majority of characters have phonetic/semantic components that make reading and understanding the language about as easy as it is for educated natives of any other tongue.

Smart explanation of writing principles of hieroglyphic. And what about the idea of replacing alphabet with pictographs - trust me, I've learned Chinese and I can say alphabetical writing is much more easier that hieroglyphic.

Here is a fun way to learn enough about how to write Chinese to sound intelligent at a pretentious party without actually learning anything.
