The residents of Wilson, NC were tired of paying for slow, overpriced internet service, so they installed fibreoptic cables. Then they offered TimeWarner and Embarq the use of the new infastructure. Uninterested, these companies said no. The city realized they could save tons of money by running the ISP themselves and now the push polling internetmongers at TimeWarner have a bill in the North Carolina legilature to stop the city.

Now, reports are coming in that say that the big US ISPs are using push polling over the phones to get customers to side with legislation that would kill faster and cheaper broadband."

As AYBGerrado said, trying this in the UK simply wouldn't work, we're getting gypped on phone bills and tethering instead of landline internet connections. Still, this won't work, they tried to make bluetooth and wifi pay services too, and see how that worked out.
