I'd played with a DOS :-) computer program that visualized Mandelbrot and Julia fractals, but one thing I didn't know was that the different colours represent the speed of change towards infinity and the black (lack of colour) represented the points decreasing to 0.
Just watch all 6 pieces of the documentary on YouTube! Arthur C. Clarke does such a wonderful job of making the subject clear to us lay people.
