tlacy discovered 2 months ago- James Randi on astrology. It is interesting that the palm reader seemed to believe in what he was doing, but completely failed to recognize how generic his readings were and how he was making guesses based on the appearance of the mark. Randi talks a bit about our brains' pattern recognition capabilities and how we often see patterns where they don't exist. I've often thought of this as a survival technique: it is better to see patterns where they don't exist than to *not* see patterns where they do (e.g. the spotted pattern of a leopard among the trees). Unfortunately, this talent may be exactly what causes folks to believe in all kinds of hooey.
