From the page: "M.J. McDermott explains the current state of math education in 4th and 5th grades." No wonder most of todays kids are god-damned morons.

I was annoyed to find that the school has my 1st grader using a calculator! Even hen I as in Algebra 2 Calculators were frowned on. We had to use them for Trig but only hen authorized by the teacher. Of course, I'd be totally in agreement with this video if I had mastered the standard version by 5th grade. At least with some of the other forms I can get to an answer. We don't need to dumb down America by being afraid to try methods that will get more students to an answer. Yes, I an my kids to know standard form but I don't want them to struggle and hate math as I did. While I do like traditional I also encourage other methods. Any mental tricks to come up with the right answer and make math fun.

I hate math, but I still recognize the need to understand how to solve basic math problems without needing to reach for a calculator. It's cool to teach kids that there are many ways to solve the same problem, but teach them the traditional tried-and-true method, too!

It's the classic dumbing down of the populace! and its got to do with more than just mathematics.. History itself disappears behind us... a few more generations and Col.Sanders becomes a civil war hero...
