- This is a YouTube video that features the studio audio recording of the Carpenters' 1975 song "Only Yesterday" along with an original video for the song featuring Karen and Richard Carpenter. I like both the video and the song but especially the song. It is one of my favorite Carpenters songs, which showcases Karen Carpenter's distinctive, beautiful lower register voice. Both the song's lyrics and melody express sadness and hope--sadness for the loneliness of the past and new hope for the present and future through the realization of new love. I have posted the lyrics of this song separately in my blog. When I listen to this song I feel both happy and sad and am reminded of Karen Carpenter's unfortunate and premature death at age 32 due to complications of anorexia nervosa--an eating disorder from which she suffered for many years before her death in 1983.
