I still get goosebumps every time I hear this song. And, watching this makes me think the same thing every time --what a f*cking waste.

nirvana ~ where did you sleep last night (mtv unplugged)i sat here, fingers on the keys, for a good ten minutes trying to find the words to review this. i've watched this performance far more times than the average person (pretty much wore my tape out in high school.) but i realized i can't put into words what this video does to my heart, the places this song takes me. i'm sure there's songs in your life that have this kind of effect too. this "mtv unplugged" performance is finally being released on dvd later this month, 14 years, almost to the day, after it was recorded. it will have some unaired songs and behind the scenes footage.

Nirvana performs Leadbelly's "Where did you sleep last night?", MTV Unplugged After being sick in withdrawal all day, Kurt scored some heroin moments before this performance. This was the final song that day. "He sang the tune with his eyes shut, and when his voice cracked, he turned the wail into a primal scream this time that seemed to go on for days. It was riveting. "As he left the stage, there was yet another argument with MTV's producers - they wanted an encore. Kurt knew he couldn't top what he'd already done. 'When you saw the sigh on his face before the last note,' Finnerty observed, 'it was almost as if it was the last breath of life in him.'" - From the moving book Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain, by Charles R. Cross

Cobain of Nirvana covers In the Pines by Huddie Ledbetter (Leadbelly). Cobain was introduced to the song by Mark Lanegan (Queens of the Stone Age, Screamin Trees) during the late '80s Seattle grunge scene.
