These clips are from the 1966 Czech film Sedmikrasky (alternative titles: Daises, or Las Margaritas). It was groundbreaking at the time of its release: a film about two young girls who didn't give a fuck about letting their hair down, who threw caution to the wind, who didn't need anybody, who just enjoyed the ride and played everything by ear, amidst the political turmoil and gender restrictions in a Communist nation.
When I watched this film for the first time, I felt a sharp tug in my heart, a twinge of envy. I kind of wanted to be like those girls. But how do you just stop caring, how do you let go, how do you stop mid-sentence and break into song and dance, how do you delight in your clumsiness without being mortified?
These girls are kind of the best.
