In the past, these have been the most profound questions for many of us around Mother's Day. But is this how the holiday really started? Did a group of mothers sit around one day and think, "We need more presents?" Not at all. The original Mother's Day was not conceived to sell us stuff we don't need, it was a day started by mothers to bring warfare to an end.
Julia Ward Howe, the author of the Battle Hymn of the Republic, was sickened by what had happened during the Civil War, the loss of life, and the carnage. In 1870, she wrote the original Mother's Day Proclamation calling upon the women of the world to unite for peace.
