If you want to support the troops....support the USO. Support the VA. Support job training and PTSD counseling for veterans. If voting Republican is your idea of "supporting the troops" then YOU FAIL. Signed: A veteran.

I never liked Letterman so much as in this clip. BUT the premise of much of this conversation is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. The CIA was not the agency providing Bush with the intelligence leading to a false justification for the Iraq war. The Office of Special Plans (OSP) did this. I can't believe that I am kind of defending the CIA, but it is true. The OSP was a civilian Defense Department unit set up by Rumsfeld, operating in the Pentagon, and run by a neocon named Douglas Feith. They gathered "intelligence" on Iraq, terrorism, and WMDs that the CIA would have dismissed as unreliable. It came from Ahmed Chalabi's Iraqi National Congress, an Iraqi government in exile/expatriot group that wanted to go back to Iraq and become its new ruling class. Defense essentially wanted to make Chalabi the new king of Iraq and he was personal friends with Wolfowiz and other members of Bush's neocon cabal. I suspect also that the Israeli Mossad provided OSP with bullshit intelligence as well. Anyway, the OSP was basically a taxpayer-financed PR organization, masquerading as an intelligence operation, and lobbying for war with Iraq. CIA was edged out of the equation because they had too much integrity to simply provide the Bush regime with falsehood. (and George Tenet was rewarded eventually for just keeping his mouth shut about the whole thing.) OSP cherry picked information from whatever such dubious sources provided, looking to confirm what they already believed to be true. I am a historian. I know how easy it is to pick and choose from data in order to support your foregone conclusions. I am exasperated that the media in general and American commonsense still perpetuates the lie that the CIA screwed up with bad intelligence before the war. That is a LIE! In fact, the Bush regime has been scapegoating the CIA and the CIA cannot fight back. They have to remain silent as part of their job description. This I believe has caused a kind of war between CIA and the regime, and that was at least one reason for the outing of Valerie Plame. Again, I cannot believe I am writing this, but this is the measure of how extreme the Bush regime is. Please, if you are reading this, spread the word. I am not one to compare the Bush people with fascism. I studied fascism as a particular historical phenomenon and I abhor the way people use the word loosely as a label for whomever they dislike. But, we are headed for something horrible. What we are headed for may be worse than fascism in various ways. What we are headed for may be more like the society depicted in 1984 than Nazi Germany. Read Yariou's review at the bottom. The problem with the whole talk show format is that people always express feelings and emotions and almost never back things up with facts.

The reason why the US is in the middle east is to establish a form of governance that can quell the tide of islamic extremism because it's unacceptable that that part of the world, with their copious amounts of wealth (oil), could be ruled by radical leaders who have openly expressed their intent to nuke Israel and other Western societies. In the name of world peace, it's a necessary thing that had to be done.
