Chatting and Personal Questions
-
SU is different from other social networking sites you may have used. It is more a social bookmarking site than a way to meet people. So just opening an account without reviewing any pages and messaging people may not be as well received as you might wish.
If you are looking for a relationship, you are probably better off at Facebook or one of the on-line dating sites. If you just want to chat, you might consider IRC (I am usually available on undernet on IRC in #solaris, #oracle, and #apache, but I rarely talk there either).
Can we chat?
Short answer: Probably not.
Long answer: As you see in my Profile, I am a bookish and introverted person. Extroverted people get their energy from others. They just don't get how absolutely painful the chats they love so much really are for me.
Introverts need to recharge their energies by being alone. Extroverts are energized by chatting in coffee shops and on Stumbleupon. I do not. No matter how much I like someone, I find these conversations draining, even when I enjoy them. If I have something worth saying, I usually say it on my pages.
So I am not a good candidate for long private chats, here or elsewhere.
On the other hand, Vishnu, I will usually respond [politely] to private messages. I have my Preferences set to accept messages from everyone most of the time. I will occasionally set them to "Accept messages from friends only" but that is only when I am getting a lot of unwanted messages, or something has happened and I need some space to think it through.
I am happy to answer private messages that ask a specific question of a non-personal nature. (I do not answer personal questions; I ignore them.) So if you need help getting started on SU or how to solve an issue here, or something else you think I might know, I really will respond to those. But I may not be able to respond immediately.
Oh, if you do write to me, could you please use full words and sentences? "Text talk" (how ru) and "memo style" ("read your blog", "cat in tree") just offend my sense of language. I'm a nice person, if sometimes withdrawn. I deserve full sentences. :)

About Personal Questions
I prefer not to answer personal questions and will ignore them. This makes some people very angry. I can't help that.
I make this decision because of some unfortunate experiences that came about by my naively sharing personal information. I have learned my lesson and I won't make the same mistake again.
Personal questions include:
- Is that your picture in the avatar?
- Where do you live?
- How old are you?
- Are you married? Do you have a boyfriend?
- What do you do for a living?
- Your address, phone number, email address
- Information about your family
- Anything you do outside of SU
A really helpful article on this is available at Playing It Safe from ElleDark.
Another article on Personal Questions from Ellie.
