Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself "as often as possible" while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages. Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process.

I hate the fact that I must click a button labeled "I like it!" in order to pass this along. The is the most insane thing I have read in a long long time. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised; once you have dehumanized a class of humans they will be exploited. The justification for the exploitation will naturally become easier and easier for more and more trivial pursuits. God forgive us.

" ARE YOU FUCKING RETARDED LADY? that's just plain dumb and disrespectful. get lost. fall off the face of the earth. drop yourself into a watery grave. whatever. just stop existing. EAT SHIT AND DIE THERE'S NOTHING MORE TO BE SAID here's to the ever decreasing value of art as a vehicle for anything other than attention.

Update: Yale, common sense prevailing, is not going to allow the "art" of Schavts to be shown unless she signs a clear statement indicating that her work is "fiction" and no biohazzard materials will be used in association with the project. It seems that some faculty members may, indeed, be disciplined for their knowledge/part in this non-artistic fiasco. article here ============== Update: She is now denying Yale's account that all the material in her "art" is fabricated and several faculty members knew of and supported her "efforts". This is really not a question of abortion or politics or what art is. That this girl (either has or claims to have) played Russian Roulette with her heath is frightening. This message she is sending to young girls (those without the gift of common sense) is dangerous. "Hey, gals! Pregnant? Not to worry. You can just terminate it yourself in the privacy of your own bathtub without the hassle of medical supervision. Doctors? Who needs them when you have herbal remedies!!!" ============================= Update: There are numerous articles now saying she fabricated the entire thing for the project. I'm not sure what kind of mentality it would take to think of something like this, whether the details are actually true or not. =================================================== I agree with "iflyme" about hating to have to hit the "thumbs up" in order to pass it along. I can only hope this is a poor, poor attempt at a joke on the part of Yale's Daily News. This is not a question of free speech. This is not a method to "open a dialog". It's not edgy. It's not cool. It's not creative. It's not a statement. It's not a medium for political discourse. It's not a legitimate exploration of anything. It's not rational. It's not sane. It's not art. It's biohazzard waste.

"Sara Rahman '09 said, in her opinion, Shvarts is abusing her constitutional right to do what she chooses with her body." Sara Rahman is more dangerous than Shvarts, the artist, is.

I already thumbed this up on the Huffington Post site. I find it very interesting.

"'I feel that she's manipulating life for the benefit of her art, and I definitely don't support it,' Serrato said. 'I think it's morally wrong.'"

Well, well. That's what it comes down to eh? Who's right and who is wrong and the age old debate of when life begins. She is the only one that could possibly be hurt; I don't know that I would sacrifice my own well-being in order to get such an abstract idea across to a nation that gets into a frenzy about seeing a woman's nipple on primetime television or that balks at allowing homosexuals civil rights* that marriage can afford them (and paper rights are all that is "sacred" to legal matrimony).

We already manipulate life, real live beings at this very moment, to live in the state most Americans are used to. Not one of us can plead innocence! To be able to sit with the luxury of a roof over our heads and make comments on our electronic devices hither-thither about this woman's actions has already cost more lives than she will ever disrupt.

*Affordable health care and other miscellaneous legal protections in the "land of the free": those are civil rights!

Someone needs to teach kids that "performance art" passed out in an alley somewhere and what they're doing in "real art time" is stroking their egos whether they intend to or not.

What a dumb bitch.

Now this is hardcore. The toll this woman must have paid psychologically for this performance must be overwhelming.
