The One Laptop Per Child project aims to get affordable laptops to children all over the world, even those in third world countries. (It can be recharged with a hand crank where there is no electricity!) Via Worldstart.com 06-NOV-2007.

From the page: "Starting November 12, One Laptop Per Child will be offering a Give 1 Get 1 Program for a brief window of time in North America. For $399, you will be purchasing two XO laptopsâ€"one that will be sent to empower a child to learn in a developing nation, and one that will be sent to your child at home. If you're interested in Give 1 Get 1, we'll be happy to send you a reminder email. Just sign up in the box to the left and you'll receive your reminder prior to the November 12 launch date. "

I've been looking for an affordable, efficient, ruggedized laptop for years and will be getting at least one of these amazing OLPC machines next month. My quest is to interface them to the real world, bridging open source, network, fabrication and farming technologies. Initial projects of interest are programming PIC chips and developing a waterwise garden irrigation controller. If some means can be devised to apply RTOS, possibly even exploring the possibilities use as a CAM controller. This would be an interesting hack, considering this system heavily sleeps the CPU as a central power saving feature.

Sorry to be a kill-joy but I really doubt this would help much at all. Give some kid in Zimbabwe a laptop, and a week later some guy who has web-access will talk the parents into trading it for a weeks worth of rice and it will end up on E-bay for some American to buy for 75 bucks. I'm all for these touchy-feelie charities, but economics is always a constant. Not trying to poo on anyones parade, but the world is a open-market and if crackheads will trade food-stamps for drugs, starving people will trade lap-tops for food. I can see the future and it is lame.
