From the page: "Xfce 4.4 embodies the traditional UNIX philosophy of modularity and re-usability. It consists of a number of components that together provide the full functionality of the desktop environment. They are packaged separately and you can pick and choose from the available packages to create the best personal working environment."

This is the lightweight GTK+ based desktop enviorment. I find this to be much nicer than either Gnome or KDE3, and it is what i run on my desktop and workstations(servers don't need a gui).

I must thank this stumble for reminding me. I wanted to try xcfe. After being split between KDE and GNOME (default apps options and interface simplicity are the two features I wanted. KDE apps call to me, GNOME's interface is nice), I wanted to try XFCE to possibly break the little stalemate (or just make it worse). Installing xubuntu-desktop as I type.

Even with fast hardware I prefer Xfce over gnome and KDE.

I switch an old computer from Ubuntu to XUbuntu and Xcfe was noticeably faster. I really don't care what the interface is as long as I can use it.
