Well thought out, complete (including information from the oil companies) and frightening.I wonder if your average 4th century Rome inhabitant knew about the coming end of their world, and because they were a form of overadapted humanity known as homo urbanis and thus unable to adjust to another... more

A frightening scenario. I do believe that Saudi Arabia have been overstating their reserves for years. It is just not countries, remember BP did a massive reduction of their oil reserves some years ago? The worst case scenarios may not come to pass as I strongly believe that man's ingenuity will see him develop alternative sources of energy (I am not talking of ethanol here - which is an immense diversion of food growing land and water). Also, I think the shortages of basic drinking water will become a reality before the full effect of oil depletion.

The peak is still out there. It's just been delayed a bit because of the global recession. As soon as the economy picks up, we'll get whacked with oil shortage problem.

Quirky view based on the past. The whole point of alternative energy is to diversify away from fossil fuels. Would the running out of oil stop or even hinder future development? I think not. During apartheid when there was an oil embargo, South Africa developed technologies to generate oil from indigenous coal via its own developed Fischer-Tropsch technologies. Before the advent of natural gas, the UK generated gas from coal. And the world has vast reserves of coal but the unfortunate thing is that coal is highly polluting, forget about CO2 capture, and will just continue to add to greenhouse gases and global warming.

This is some scary stuff, man. Looks like shit's going to go down. Hard. Not that it's surprising, it's just... different when you've got the figures. I guess it's more "real" when you have the figures.

A look at what may happen when oil runs out in the not-so-distant future. Particularly interesting is the section on which countries may fair best (and worst)
