  • How to Avoid Looking Like an American Tourist - wikiHow

oh come on, this is impossible! You can never cover up the fact that you're a tourist. Even the very inconspicuously dressed tourists around here still stick out. They just walk more slowly, they actually look up at the buildings around them, they stop and point at things and generally look... more

Good advice especially the one about "be quiet"... you can always, and I mean, always tell when an American comes in the area because they are so noisy, saying every little thing that enters their heads. Still, when I visit America I make a conscious effort to be louder than normal otherwise I never get noticed, sometimes literally. Heh ho, viva la difference :) if you don't travel you never learn and many people/cultures would not tell you when you are making an arse out of yourself for fear of appearing rude themselves. Afterall no-one likes knowing they've been making themselves look stupid all day. hehehehe, curiously no one has ever complained about Americans tipping even when it is not expected (except in Asia of course where it is often rude to be seen doing it). Some good advice for all people too, especially the one on "learn at least a few words" always a good idea as well as an ice breaker.

This is a funny and brutally honest article. But I have to admit, I love my baseball hats and will continue to wear them overseas.

I used to travel with this one girl in middle school. Canada, New York, The Thousand Islands, Florida, etc. Her step-father always used to wear a fanny pack. I'll stick to purses. There are a few good tips in this article if you don't know much about traveling, yet some borderline on insanity/paranoia. I already planned on learning at least a little bit of another language before I move on to a lot of international travel. That's common sense, it will make the vacation less stressful and more fun. There's a difference between a tourist and a complete jerk however. I agree with many others. You just need to be polite and respectful of others as you should be doing already.
