aestheticart discovered 4 months ago- "Velimir Chlebnikov: Schicksale der Völker", 2004, Oil, emulsion, acrylic on canvas with lead boats, 380 x 560 cm, by Anselm Kiefer, Germany. (Photo: Stephen White) Born in 1945 - a peculiar year of triumph and mourning for all Europeans - Anselm Kiefer's work has orbited around the war. His works tend towards the huge, usually with incredibly thick impasto of pigment mixed with just about anything and everything. He is among the very, very few contemporary artists whose paintings grip the heart, a quality they have in common with the music of composers like Szymanowski and Mahler. The beauty of the paintings doesn't really appear in the photos. Just like people, there are paintings which are photogenic and paintings which aren't. Kiefer's works fall into the second category: they have to been seen "in the flesh". There is a very good selection of his work at this site. It's a must for all Anselm Kiefer fans.
