A revolutionary laptop battery that lasts for 30 years: created according to Murphy's law, this battery will die in the only moment u will really need your laptop during all the 30 years.

This is a complete hoax, no?

(Me = Science degree, science teacher.) At first glance, this looks like an amazing new technology - a 30 year laptop battery. However, there are some concerns that I personally have with this technology. From the article, it is most likely this technology uses a beta-radiation source, and captures the beta particles released to produce voltage. Beta particles are extremely high energy electrons released from a decaying radioactive nucleus. They are one of three common nuclear radiation types. The others are alpha particles - charged helium nuclei, and gamma rays - think "super-energetic X-rays." Beta radiation is the second most penetrating form of nuclear radiation known, beaten only by gamma radiation. It can go 10-20 mm through body tissues ... i.e. your hand ... and ~5mm through aluminium. It can definitely go through a standard plastic laptop casing, and through the material in your trousers as well. Considering most current laptops put the battery at the bottom of the machine, a battery incorporating this technology will want at least 1/2cm of aluminium on all sides, or 1/4 that thickness of lead. Using lead of course would lead to problems of heavy metal leakage if the product is dumped in a landfill, which is unfortunately where most consumer electronics end up. Beta radiation is also a type of radiation known as ionising radiation. Basically, when it hits something ... like your hand or your lap ... because it's a charged particle, it causes more damage than non-ionising (gamma or X-ray) radiation, especially to your DNA. The word for today children is "testicular cancer". Yay. Like pokemon, before you put this on your lap, you'd "wanna catch them all." This technology IS nuclear. Nuclear fusion and fission are only two of the several known types of nuclear reaction. The best that can be said for this technology is that it won't lead to a nuclear explosion. In fact, the amount of energy that is emitted will exponentially decrease over time. What this means is that if say the technology releases 1/2 it's total energy in the first 10 years, over the next 10 years you will only get 1/4 of total energy (1/2 the original power output), and 1/8th of total energy in the 10 years after that (1/4 of the original power output). Finally it is stated that the technology doesn't produce "nuclear waste". Technically, this sentence is 100% true. Beta sources tend to decay to non-radioactive, stable lead, given enough time. But the fact that there isn't any nuclear waste at the end of the process says nothing about if it produces radiation during the process, or even if the product has stopped radiating at the end of that 30 years. Before I used this, I'd want to know the type of beta-source they are using. I'd want to know it's purity and how much of it is put into each battery. I'd want to know the time it takes for the source to fully (As in doesn't release appreciable levels of radiation) decay to non-radioactive lead. I'd want to know what type of shielding was incorporated in the battery body, what techniques the manufacturer uses to prevent leakage during product use, and I'd certainly want an independent researcher to test the radiation count on the surface of the battery. All in all, I'd want to make sure that the technology was WELL tested by third parties before I put it on my lap.

Wow. This kind of energy storage source is really something fantastic, if something can hold on to a charge for that long, then there is no need to build charging circuits in laptops and devices. Cool.

Basically, picture your laptop battery lasting 30 years without a single charge. Is this a new technology that will revolutionize our lives?
