The Einstein Memorial in Washington DC The Best Memorial that almost No One Knows About If you ever have had the luck (or misfortune) of visiting the Memorials in Washington DC, then you will know that know nearly every memorial shares the following traits: 1) they are all in out in the open blazing sun, 2) they are all crowded, and 3) they are all fairly stodgy (columns, flags, displays, roped off areas, and guards). But there is one exception and that is the Einstein Memorial:The bronze figure is situated in a grove in the southwest corner of the National Academy of Science. In its left hand, the figure holds a paper with mathematical equations summarizing three of Einstein's most important scientific contributions. Three quotations from Einstein are engraved on the bench where the figure is seated:As long as I have any choice in the matter, I shall live only in a country where civil liberty, tolerance, and equality of all citizens before the law prevail.Joy and amazement of the beauty and grandeur of this world of which man can just form a faint notion ...The right to search for truth implies also a duty; one must not conceal any part of what one has recognized to be true.At the statue's base there is a field of emerald pearl granite embedded with more than 2,700 metal studs representing the celestial objects accurately positioned by astronomers the dedication date. The memorial is an amazing place with a totally different "feel" from the other memorials, its fun and contemplative. Its surrounded by trees and is very "zen" feeling. There are usually a fair number of kids climbing on Einstein. My guess is that, in life, Einstein would have never wanted a memorial, but I think he would have liked this one.
