From the site: "Before 1939, Nazca was just a small town in the one of the driest deserts of the world. But that desert turned out to be a sketch-pad for ancient Indians and one of the greatest scientific mysteries in the New World. The Nazca Lines are a series of drawings of animals, geometric figures and birds ranging up to 300 metres (1000 feet) in size, etched into the arid crust of the pampa and preserved for about 2000 years thanks to a complete lack of rain and special winds that cleaned - but not erased - the desert."

From the page....The Nazca Lines are gigantic geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert, a high arid plateau that stretches 53 miles between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana in Peru. They were created by the Nazca culture between 200 BC and 600 AD. There are hundreds of individual figures, ranging in complexity from simple lines to stylized hummingbirds, spiders, monkeys, and lizards. The Nazca lines cannot be recognized as coherent figures except from the air. Since it is presumed the Nazca people could never have seen their work from this vantage point, there has been much speculation on the builders' abilities and motivations.

Archeologist's found pottery at sites around the location that depicted people flying in what appeared to be hot air balloons. Then they found extremely tight woven "tapestry" pieces near the pottery. One bright archaeologist decided to have the fabric recreated and formed into "balloons" similar to those depicted on the pottery. He then stoked huge fires and used bellows to fill the "balloon" and was able to get airborne with the replicated fabric "balloons". Here's a link to an article on the subject:* http://www.nott.com/Pages/projects.php * and this great article as well:* http://www.nott.com/Pages/Nazca_BFA-1.pdf * The theoretical conclusion is that these folks viewed these "mysterious" lines from their ancient "balloons". All civilizations have looked to the sky with the belief that aliens and/or gods looked down upon them, why not give them something magnificent to look at? Considering we live in the age of information one no longer need be so "mystified" by relatively explainable phenomena. I feel like we sensationalize the mystery of our past to make it nebulous and untouchable to better validate our shallow modern existence. I would prefer we start looking at the ancients as FAR more advanced humans who had a deeper understanding of their lives than we do now. Just my opinion though ...
