excellent post and spot on, I know a good couple of people who grew up like that and it still shows now that they're adults.

I agree with the sentiment that being a smothering and overprotective parent is probably a bad thing, but I think the author has vastly exaggerated the prevalence of that phenomenon. I'm a youngun - I wasn't raised like that, and neither was anyone I knew. My brother is eight years younger than I am - he wasn't raised like that, and neither were any of his friends. This is just an updated version of the "kids these days" gripe. I can't help but roll my eyes at the idea that "the next generation" is going to hell in a handbasket. That's exactly what your parents said about your generation, and their parents before them.

I completely agree with this. I'm always disgusted looks from other parents when I trust my very independent and trustworthy 7 year old to do things on her own with out my interference.

I think the author might be exaggerating a bit, but he does make a very good point.

great post. As a kid, i had baby sitters all the time, i swear my mom even had sitters hanging around occasionally when we were 14... fortunately, after about 8 y/old, the sitters knew we weren't babies, and generally sat around and just hung out with us while we cooked (on a stove! omfg!) and watched horror movies. But for the most part, after I was about 12, we walked to the store and to mcdonalds and wherever we could... and i was never stolen, raped, kidnapped, or even overcharged for a pack of gum. everyone is so taken by how bad things could be to see how bad they really *aren't* - If you let what *could* happen rule your life, you wouldn't even be able to sit alone in your house without being afraid it would burn down, couldn't eat without be afraid of food poisoning, couldn't go outside for fear of getting hit by a car... i think parents should prepare their kids by teaching them how to handle situations, not avoid them completely.

From the page: "Ultimately, the goal of parenting is to raise confident, independent, well rounded adults. How can you possibly accomplish that when your parental caution turns into downright hysterics and your frightened children decide to opt out of growing up completely?"
