From the page: ""As offensive and painful as flag burning is to me, I still believe that those dissenting voices need to be heard...The freedom of expression, even when it hurts, is the truest test of our dedication to the belief that we have that right." - Gary May, the Chairman of the Veterans Defending the Bill of Rights"

Senate Defeats Flag Amendment The "Flag Desecration Amendment," which would amend the Constitution to give Congress the power to criminalize any "physical desecration" of the American flag, was narrowly defeated by the U.S. Senate in June. The measure failed by one single vote. The flag amendment is opposed by a broad spectrum of individuals encompassing conservative and progressive beliefs, including thousands of veterans, who fear the implications for basic American freedoms if the amendment were ratified. This amendment would restrict one of the very freedoms that the flag represents: freedom of speech. Though we as individuals are free to condemn those who would deface the flag, censorship has no place in the Constitution. With the margin so close in the Senate, we must continue fighting to defend the First Amendment against this unnecessary and dangerous attack. This amendment would be the first restriction ever placed on our First Amendment right to free speech, using the flag as a vehicle to take away one of the very freedoms it represents. This country is unique and special because the minority, the unpopular, the dissident also have a voice. The freedom of expression, even when it hurts, is the truest test of our dedication to the principles that our flag represents. Many veterans who have faithfully served our country strongly believe that amending the Constitution to ban flag desecration is the antithesis of what they fought to preserve. The flag burning amendment is a solution is search of a problem. Historians have shown that in the 200 years between when the flag was adopted in 1777 and when Congress passed a flag burning law -- which was then rejected by the Supreme Court in 1989 --only 45 instances of flag burning had been reported. A measure of such magnitude to serve a purpose so petty is a glaring example of election-year politics trumping the true interests of the American people.

An earlier review of this page by brtkrbzhnv stated: "I see these groups that consist of veterans only as rather silly, except in those few cases where the cause in question is directly related to their being veterans, e.g. anti-war groups." I take exception to this opinion. Of all activist groups in this great nation, veterans groups have more right to speak out on issues of free speech over any other for this one reason: They took an oath to 'protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic.' So I ask this reviewer, did you ever take such an oath? I seriously doubt it. You just pledged to a piece of cloth. We veterans pledged to an idea that includes Free Speech. Go vets! Defenders of our precious Constitution. Oops, wait. I jumped the gun. This kid is from Sweden.

Who better to defend our endangered Bill of Rights than those who have been willing to put their lives on the line for this Nation.

From the About pages: "Veterans Defending the Bill of Rights, founded in 1999, is a network of thousands of U.S. military veterans from all eras who are deeply concerned about the proposal to restrict Constitutionally guaranteed free speech in exchange for "protecting" the symbol of free speech and other civil liberties."

This amendment does something else. It shows up those congresspeople who are so shallow as to vote for it. Number one: pre-candidate for 2008 - the senator from New York, Hillary Clinton who seems to think that she can gain points by looking more Catholic than the Pope.

No rock is permanent. There are always those who will chip away slowly but surely at it - as do the airbags in our government who actually spend time considering stupid proposals, and then come to the conclusion that the constitution just needs somehow to be different. Trying to make flag desecration illegal is one of those proposals making its way time and again into our Administration. It will not suprise me if it finally becomes law; so many specks of dust have been chipped away at the rock we always thought our country was. But make no mistake, enough little specks of dust can certainly weaken the whole altogether and sooner than later chunks will fall and then everything crumbles to the ground.
