From the page: "How Little Do Users Read?"

Image from hydrangeaglow "On the average Web page, users have time to read at most 28% of the words during an average visit; 20% is more likely." Research on how much of a web page is read. The researcher found that the back button is now only the 3rd most-used feature on the Web. Unfortunately the study has been done with mostly university employees that is, according to Nielsen, above-average intelligence.

Useful bit of number crunching from Jakob Nielsen, who takes page-view times and word count to calculate that people only read about 20% (or 28% max) of the words on each page. Time to edit my copy...
