More words of Usability wisdom from the Dean of Usability. I have seen some hardware manufacturers (routers) that provide the option to turn off the masking and to see what you are acutally typing and the feature is a Major plus. I think its time for password masking to go away.

I partially agree with scottclark, even if I wouldn't call it "ajaxy", as it would not need any ajax communication. Just a simple JS changing the "type" option. But the default should be masking password, not vice versa.

I'm all for this, though an option might be a good idea also. Web developers add on their forms, causing the browsers to use their masking. I recommend making a "check box" next to the field that says "mask my password" as a real-time, ajaxy option.

Wow, I couldn't disagree with this more. Websites don't mask passwords, browsers do. Don't override a user's settings.
