Great article, Spocko. I just hope that something effective can be done in time.

Those who want political patronage for their sabotage of American health have found it in this President. I venture to say that both political parties are using dirty money to promote their candidates, regardless of platform positions or the candidates' values.

From the page: "Smoke, Mirrors & Hot Air: How ExxonMobil Uses Big Tobacco's Tactics to "Manufacture Uncertainty" on Climate Change details how the oil company, like the tobacco industry in previous decades, has * raised doubts about even the most indisputable scientific evidence * funded an array of front organizations to create the appearance of a broad platform for a tight-knit group of vocal climate change contrarians who misrepresent peer-reviewed scientific findings * attempted to portray its opposition to action as a positive quest for "sound science" rather than business self-interest * used its access to the Bush administration to block federal policies and shape government communications on global warming"

From the page: "Though solutions are available now that will cut global warming emissions while creating jobs, saving consumers money, and protecting our national security, ExxonMobil has manufactured confusion around climate change science, and these actions have helped to forestall meaningful action that could minimize the impacts of future climate change."This really comes as no surprise. I'd like to think that with ice caps melting, ozone disappearing, and species dying off, there'd be enough sense and concern in the population to realize that this is a result of our consumption and that folks would work to do their part to reduce their impact on that regardless of bullshit studies put out by the very corporations that make the damage possible.

The Union of Concerned Scientists has released a report detailing $18M spent by Exxon to fund research and publications by scientists and policy groups which promote the view that climate change is not occurring. "Smoke, Mirrors & Hot Air: How ExxonMobil Uses Big Tobacco's Tactics to "Manufacture Uncertainty" on Climate Change" details how the oil company, like the tobacco industry in previous decades, has * raised doubts about even the most indisputable scientific evidence * funded an array of front organizations to create the appearance of a broad platform for a tight-knit group of vocal climate change contrarians who misrepresent peer-reviewed scientific findings * attempted to portray its opposition to action as a positive quest for "sound science" rather than business self-interest * used its access to the Bush administration to block federal policies and shape government communications on global warming

From the page: "ExxonMobil has funneled nearly $16 million between 1998 and 2005 to a network of 43 advocacy organizations that seek to confuse the public on global warming science" I'm glad these practices have been exposed now.

From the page: "A new report from the Union of Concerned Scientists offers the most comprehensive documentation to date of how ExxonMobil has adopted the tobacco industry's disinformation tactics, as well as some of the same organizations and personnel, to cloud the scientific understanding of climate change and delay action on the issue. According to the report, ExxonMobil has funneled nearly $16 million between 1998 and 2005 to a network of 43 advocacy organizations that seek to confuse the public on global warming science."

From the page: ""The paper trail shows that, to serve its corporate interests, ExxonMobil has built a vast echo chamber of seemingly independent groups with the express purpose of spreading disinformation about global warming."" What is sad is that people are actually swayed in their thinking by people who have a financial interest in the outcome of political or private decisions. Whether it is Exxon, Wal-Mart, mealy mouthed preachers, or an administration that has lost touch with reality, we get the same treatment - glib selling of newthink ideas instead of exposure to the truth that would incite critical thinking. How unfortunate that so many Americans believe anything the modern carnival barkers of industry have to sell, whether it is the most modern electronic gadget or disinformation about global warming.
