A photographic chronicle retracing Hsuan Tsang's heroic 7th century voyage
Hsuan Tsang's mention of Ujjayani is today's Ujjain in western India. Every evening, the city holds the Puja ceremony by Shipra River, where all Brahmans hold torches fueled by butter and walk down the steps
by the river.

Every morning before sunrise, countless Hindu pilgrims flock to the Ganges River. They soak themselves in the river and pray while facing east. Hindus believe that the river is sacred; if they bathe in it, they can wash away their sins.

In Indian legends, Haridwar is where the
Ganges River flows down from heaven
to the human world, so many religious practitioners and pilgrims gather here.
Gangadvara, that Hsuan Tsang saw
was here in Haridwar.
