The first time I laid eyes on Maasai tribesmen
is a moment I have never forgotten.
I could almost tell you the date, even though I was only sitting
in the living room of our house in Napier, New Zealand.
And it was just a page in the old set of encyclopedias we
had, The Wonderlan...

The first time I laid eyes on Maasai tribesmen
is a moment I have never forgotten.
I could almost tell you the date, even though I was only sitting
in the living room of our house in Napier, New Zealand.
And it was just a page in the old set of encyclopedias we
had, The Wonderland of Knowledge, but there they were
when I turned the page, standing as proud as kings full on
to the camera -- and me.
It was a moment of enormous relief for a nine-year-old.
The words that formed were: "I knew the
whole world wasn't like Mum and Dad."
Sorry, Mum and Dad.
It really was a turning point and the start of
a lifelong curiosity about other lifestyles.
