KarenAK discovered 3 months ago- A computer driven by a vacuum cleaner motor - ingenious ! Today in History - 12.5.1941: Computer invented Zuse built a two by two-meter monstrosity made of sheet metal parts, glass panels and program cylinders. A machine which was later called a "computer." He had sawed the metal parts himself, and did not receive any financial support. The original was destroyed in the Second World War. A copy of the legendary Z1, as Zuse called it, is now in the Berlin Museum für Verkehr und Technik (Museum for transportation and technology). Götz Widiger, who maintains the machine, recognizes that it contains all the components that modern computers also have: the actual computer, memory and an output device. "The whole thing is so impressive because it is a mechanical computer," says Widiger. "There are no relays. In 1937, transistors had not been dreamt of, and it is thus so big. At that time, Zuse built it in Kreuzberg in his parent's living room with a few friends and all the circuit elements are mechanical and made of pieces of sheet steel that slide against one another.
