eating placenta... I thought I'd heard it all And then they validate this by saying that all mammals do this. The same people would probably say that we're not animals in defence of a different argument. Call me prudish or old-fashioned, but this is ridiculous. Cannibalism?

"To my surprise, Sara did not look unkempt, frumpy, heavy or in any way like a Wiccan. She got into placenta-cooking after taking a Chinese-medicine course and has already prepared more than two dozen placentas this year -- and orders are picking up rapidly. When I asked Sara if her parents were embarrassed by what she does, she told me that her father sells bull semen. "By law, Sara has to cook the placenta at the placenta owner's home. But to my great relief, she brought her own equipment, gloves, sponges and even more detergent than I'd hoped, scrubbing constantly as she worked. If I ever kill a man in my own home, I am totally calling the placenta lady." (And thank YOU, Joost!)

I have to admit this is one of the funnier columns I've read in a long time, despite the faint tinge of nausea sitting in the pit of my stomach. Knowing my luck, if/when I give birth, such an odd idea will be highly recommended to me, and I'll feel obligated to try it.

i feel strangely comforted to see a mainstream article on eating human placenta after my post on the topic just a few weeks ago: qiu-on-this.blogspot.com/2009/06/re-human-placenta.html but this has video too :-)

I had planned on doing this, even down to scheduling the placenta lady. Then my silly husband forgot the placenta in my hospital room and it sat out for 24 hours. I still kept it. Maybe someday I'll bury it under a tree dedicated to my kids. :D
