fafnir665 rated 8 weeks ago- I like it, but the word definition should read "Technological Singularity: A point of yada yada blag" There are several singularities that have been theorized that are related to this one idea, but have separate definitions. Social, technological, economic. Popular assumption is all would occur at once, but they can be achieved separately and popular fiction has numerous examples of this.
Star Trek : Economic singularity as the result of replicator tech.
Minority Report : Social singularity arises from the advent of the prescience.
Though really, social and technological tend to be more intertwined and written about than economical. Like the monoculture and AI "Gods" featured by writers like Stross, Vinge, and Asher (Line of Polity).
Also, the economic type is more imaginable for most people.
Though, the working definition I tend to use is "point where rate of change approaches infinite"- I like it, but the word definition should read "Technological Singularity: A point of yada yada blag" There are several singularities that have been theorized that are related to this one idea, but have separate definitions. meatbot rated 9 months ago- Seems like a pretty cool blog based around the concept of the approaching sigularity. it's great to see such vast amounts of perspectives on the singularity in media everywhere. On the National Geographic channel tonight I saw a doc called Robo Sapien which provided a good and comprehensive outlook on these emerging technologies. It's official: AI is now mainstream.

Thar rated 10 months ago- The Ethics of Enhancing Humanity
Posted: 27 Aug 2007 07:19 PM CDT "When will medical science begin to use technology to enhance healthy people in addition to treating the sick? ... The next frontier is enhancing life through medical intervention. ... The sort of methodologies in science that I'm talking about are stem cell science, cloning and the new genetics," he said. I predict that this sentiment will, unfortunately, be criticized by misguided people who will accuse scientists of "playing God," who alone, according to them, should have the right to improve humanity. But if a few visionary men and women see that there exists the potential for a massive market for such enhancements, the naysayers will just be whistling in the dark."- The Ethics of Enhancing Humanity
