I missed seeing this story about the RIAA: A WOMAN who was sued by the Recording Industry of America for file-sharing has countersued the outfit for hacking. Tanya Andersen, a 41-year old disabled single mother living in Oregon, has countersued the RIAA for Oregon RICO violations, fraud, invasion of privacy, abuse of process, electronic trespass, violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, negligent misrepresentation. She is claiming hurt feelings and "outrage", and deceptive business practices. According to court documents here, Anderson said the record industry has been abusing the law courts and waged a public relations and public threat campaign targeting file sharing.

Hurray for her.

Understand, I see the need for protecting artists and making sure they get their fair share. However, activities like this only make people harm them more by turning them against those who represent them. And the Music Corporations deserve all the derision showered on them for such actions as this.

From the page: "RIAA sued by victim - Hackers and racketeers" This is some good news. It would be better if she'd won already. The folks trying to intimidate innocent consumers need strung up.

At the time I read it (Oct 2006) this article was over a year old. The only follow-up I've found on a quick search is This article at blogspot.com which says that both she and the RIAA were seeking dismisal of the suit and respective counter-suit with judgements to happen in Febuary of 2006.

It's amazing. Hollywood and the music industry are predominantly from the political left, and as such throw massive fits over electronic eavesdropping against terror suspects...but seem to have no problem with it when it comes to protecting their profit$. Hypocrites.
