PoisonPen rated 26 months ago- After years of playing the odds, the Crocodile Hunter has finally crapped out -- and already the reactionaries are having their go at him.
[Josh Laughren, director of marine conservation at World Wildlife Fund Canada] said Mr. Irwin was brilliant at connecting with people. Canadian conservationists need to be more engaging, he acknowledged, but he went on to say that the Aussie's methods could be very dangerous.
"When you live your life manufacturing confrontations with wildlife you're playing the odds every time," he said. "We don't need people going out and forcing confrontation with bears; we've seen that in the past and it ends up in disaster."
And we must all be safe! No one must ever take any risks, ever, for any reason! Let's add bear laws and crocodile laws to our seatbelt laws and helmet laws so that no one anywhere is ever again at risk for anything. Safety first! Remember, kids, your life belongs to the State, and it's not yours to risk!
"Common sense goes a long way, but Steve Irwin did not show a lot of common sense to the public," said the 60-year-old leader of Snake Getters, a volunteer group that responds to calls from people concerned about reptiles on their property.
Well, imagine that. Steve Irwin did not minimize his risk exposure. How rude! How dare he live larger than life! We must all lead small, ordinary lives without deeper meaning or purpose, and we must do so without drawing any attention to ourselves, because it's just common sense!
I was going to add Thoreau's thoughts on this, but they're important enough that I think I'm going to make them my Thought for the Day. Those of you reading this through the article reviews rather than my blog will just have to click through to find out.
