Let me get this straight- Britney Spears gets criticized by the media (obviously because of the patriarchy!) and suddenly she's a feminist icon? Let's not forget who we're talking about here. Shaving one's head does not neccessarily make one a feminist.

Um, yeeaaah, I don't think so. I doubt a woman who says we should all "trust the President and do whatever he says" is really fed up with the patriarchy. She may get there some day though. She seems pissed off and frustrated enough with how she's portrayed in the media - the constant censure of and deliberation over her maternal abilities, her intelligence, her appearance, her sexual experience (was she really a virgin when she was dating Justin Timberlake? The public needs to know!), whether she's famous for her talent or for her looks... She could be well on her way to a real "Fuck You All" moment. I would love to see that, actually. I was hoping for as much with this last big blow-up when she shaved her head and beat on those paparazzi with her umbrella. But my hopes were somewhat dashed when she came back in extensions and hot pants as if nothing had changed. I do think it's indicitive of a simplistic hive mentality that she's so often bashed for the same moral vagueries over and over, like being "slutty" or "trashy." I see some potentional with her. She may be more feminist than she herself even realizes - feminist in that she's not so masochistic that having her value as a human being constantly called into question doesn't make her want to punch a hole into a wall. But no, I don't see Spears as a feminist icon. Maybe when she's older. It's an interesting proposition though.

o please. she is self made by selling herself. y dont we just call high class hookers "success stories"!! Any how, is SOMEONE forgetting that her first big song was about how she can't leave her abusive boyfriend? How is that feminist?? Fuckin idiots. I am no misogynist! I believe in women doing well because of their talent, not their tits.

I only KIND OF agree with the statement below. I will agree that male stars catch a lot less flack than females, but it's usually from other females. From the page: "Despite the oft-proclaimed notion that feminism is a dated movement that ceased to be relevant once we%u2019d won the vote and got the Pill, Britney-hating and hatred of all the other female celebrities that cover our magazines, such as Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, is merely thinly disguised misogyny. "

From the page: "Britney is original, fabulous, and most importantly good at what she does"
Oh bullshit. I can sing better than Britney, and you don't wanna hear ME sing. She actually sucks at what she does, but gets headlines cuz she's a slut and has a cute ass. THIS is feminism? I'm gonna be sick.
