From the page: "A lecturer has criticised students for relying on websites like Google and Wikipedia to do their thinking for them. Professor Tara Brabazon, from the University of Brighton, said too many young people around the world were taking the easy option when asked to do research and simply repeating the first things they found on internet searches." This.is.plain.stupid. How does Google become faulty if students are being lazy? Even I am a student, then a professional. I use Google, Wikipedia and similar sites all the time to do research. What's wrong with that?

I bet she would have banned using new-fangled books over the more thought provoking, passed down from Bard to Bard, spoken history from the elders.

Those unwilling to adapt to technology are doomed.

I think any source of information needs to be sourced and cited, Textbooks included, there is not a textbook out there that gets reviewed, fact-checked, and error-checked, by subject matter experts, like Wikipedia. Yet I still would not totally trust it. But to ban it is just elitist.

Maybe it makes sense to ban using Wikipedia or blogs as research, but Google? I'm not sure what she is getting at with banning a search engine. Wouldn't it be better to teach the use of original sources as well as learning how to use the internet to search out information from universities, museums, and libraries around the globe? We have an amazing array of knowledge at our fingertips. I'm all for the printed page, but why not learn to take full advantage of our technology instead of outright censure?

Boo. Hey Lady, whats the point of inventing technology if we can't use it? How about you walk instead of using an aeroplane? Yeah, makes about as much sense as your argument.

Professor Tara Brabazon, from the University of Brighton, said too many young people around the world were taking the easy option when asked to do research and simply repeating the first things they found on internet searches. She has dubbed the phenomenon "The University of Google". advertisement Prof Brabazon said: "The education world has pursued new technology with an almost evangelical zeal and it is time to take a step back and give proper consideration of how we use it. "Too many students don't use their own brains enough. We need to bring back the important values of research and analysis." think where we are heading...

This Lecturer's reasons for prohibiting use of google seem to lead to her conclusion.

Why ban students that actually do work from excellent sources of resource?
