From the page:
"Today, Wednesday, June 7th U.S. Army First Lieutenant Ehren Watada will become the first commissioned officer to refuse deployment to the unlawful Iraq war and occupation. "

harrystottle rated 2 months ago- the inalienable right of every soldier we ask to go fight and kill on our behalf is to refuse on the grounds that he, personally, has not been convinced that there is an ethical case for such action. This degree of autonomy is a primary, absolutely essential - defining - requirement for democracy.

- True Hero!!

ketogah rated 8 months ago- A true hero. He will not fight in an illegal war. from the page: "On November 8th, we rejoiced to learn of the preliminary injunction issued by U.S. District Court Judge Benjamin Settle to halt any further court martial proceedings of Lt. Ehren Watada until the conclusion of the habeas corpus proceedings. The court held that Lt. Watada is likely to succeed at demonstrating that the military judge acted 'irrationally, irresponsibly, precipitately' and abused his 'discretion,' that the judge failed to consider feasible alternatives to a mistrial and there was no good reason for having stopped the trial in February, 2007. (Read the points made by Judge Settle >>>) Incredibly, the Army has announced its intent to file briefs in U.S. District Court to try to prevent the injunction from becoming permanent. THIS SATURDAY, NOV 17TH, SUPPORT LT WATADA AND SEND A CLEAR MESSAGE TO THE ARMY AND THE PRESIDENT. No New Court Martial! Dismiss All Charges! Release Lt. Watada with an Honorable Discharge! The National Steering Committee of Friends & Family of Lt. Watada calls on supporters nationwide to vigil on the 1st & 3rd Saturdays of each month."

Maddog2840 rated 12 months ago- He is an officer in the U.S.Army. He has no right to refuse an order. He has no right to speak out politically. As a soldier to VOLUNTARILY give up these rights. It doesn't mean you lose all your rights. It means they are curtailed in order to insure discipline. "We are not here to practice democracy but to protect it."

Johnny-Ringo rated 15 months ago- What part of: "I swear or affirm that I will uphold the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign or domestic, to bear true faith and allegiance to the same and to discharge well and faithfully the duties of the office without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion." is confusing? Nobody forced him to join the armed forces, and it was his duty to fulfill his commitment. Whether you're for or against the war, he DID make a commitment to serve... a commitment he is now trying to back out on. That's not patriotic, that's traitorous. I'm glad I never had a lieutenant like him when I served.

grimmjack66 rated 16 months ago- He joined the US Army after the United States invaded Iraq. If he thought the war was unlawful why enlist? So he could be hero to the anti-American losers who support defeat at any cost. His parent are big libs in Hawaii...this is a setup...this guy is a disgrace...give him a Dishonorable Discharge...and send him back to Mommy and Daddy.

clcallies rated 16 months ago- If you think the ware is illegal you should still deploy and have your mom sue in federal court to have everyone come home. If you do what Lt. Watada did everyone is just going to think your a chicken. It is good to see he is being retried.

jparker911 rated 16 months ago- From the page: "Support Lt Watada!"~~~~~~~~~I would gladly support Lt. Watada, in fact I'll buy the rope and build the gallows. Coward, traitor and embezzler. He should be hanged.

millerfamily rated 16 months ago- From the page: "On June 22, 2006, U.S. Army 1st Lieutenant Ehren K. Watada stepped forward as the first commissioned officer to publicly refuse deployment to the Iraq War and occupation. He faces court martial and up to 4 years imprisonment (reduced from an original 6 years maximum) for refusing to deploy and for speaking out against a war that he believes is illegal. "

BigDaddyB rated 17 months ago- From reading the comments about this page it comes down to two sides, obviously pro and con. Pro are people who are looking at this as an international anti war thing. A hold over from 40 yrs ago or something, for them it is a political anti Bush statement. For the others, it seems a bit more personal. What is a soldiers job? To follow orders. You are not asked whether or not you like the order, you are just expected to do your job. If he didnt want to take the chance of going into combat, he shouldn't have singed up with a Bush as President. I also must agree with http://butcherbird.stumbleupon.com/ he abandonded his troops. Noone could have been worse than Watada to lead those men into combat. Had they got him on the plane, it is my fear he would have run away from troops in danger. So I guess it is good that his cowardice came out when it did. I live less than a mile from Fort Lewis. I spent 3 years in the service of my country, I served in 7th Corps, 3rd Armored Division in Operation Desert Storm. The platoon leaders I served under during my time in the army were genuinely good guys. During the trial here my wife was accosted by the protesters as she came off of the freeway, they tried to give her material that she politely refused. This began weeks before the actual trial started. In my opinion, this man should spend years in prison, get a dishonerable discharge and never be allowed into public service. I would vote for a kangaroo over this individual.
